Ideas for small gardens

In her book "Big Ideas for Small Gardens," Gartenzauber editor Victoria Wegner presents great ideas for small gardens based on 10 gardens ranging from 100 to 350 square meters. She not only demonstrates how diversely they can be designed, but also shows how to create more space in a small space. The great thing about them: these are truly small terraced house gardens or semi-detached plots like the ones you and I have, and they are beautifully staged with beautiful images by photographer Marion Nickig.

Refined

Hildegard Caesar has a keen eye for detail. She uses mirrors to visually enlarge her 350-square-meter garden, and behind the thinly trimmed yew hedges that border the garden are practical secret paths that are not visible from the house. From there, she can easily trim the hedges and, in winter, store delicate pots.
Hildegard Caesar also diversified the transition between two lawns with Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile 'Treneague'), which smells fantastic when mowed. And behind the island bed, bordered by boxwood and lushly covered with snakeweed (Polygonum bistorta), hostas (Hosta), and azaleas (Rhododendron luteum), there's a compost arbor beneath curved rebar overgrown with ivy.

Close to nature

Dorothea Steffen designed her 100-square-meter garden in the style of Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf, whose plantings emphasize lush perennials and grasses, providing the garden with year-round structure. Following the motto "as much flowerbed as possible," around 60 rose varieties grow among the countless casually interwoven perennials and grasses.
Not only does it smell wonderful, it also buzzes and hums incessantly, as plants like the mountain leek (Allium senescens ssp. montanum) are excellent bee and butterfly habitats. There's even plenty of room for a children's swing on a gravel area, blending beautifully into the natural garden.

The hillside garden

The Frank family designed their 250-square-meter hillside garden on several levels. In addition to the terrace, a pond, a lawn that serves as a place for the dogs to lie down, and numerous flowerbeds, there is also a relaxation terrace with two deckchairs. The levels are connected by stairs and natural stone walls designed by Klaus Frank himself.
The beds are planted in a natural style with many perennials and around 40 species and varieties of hydrangea. The Franks have particularly taken a liking to the lacecap hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata), also known in the Netherlands as the mountain hydrangea. They grow gracefully and elegantly and can be perfectly integrated into narrow beds. Another highlight are woody plants, for example, a horse chestnut hybrid (Aesculus x mutabilis 'Penduliflora') by the pond. This rather delicate chestnut tree delights with its tropical-looking blossoms. A Japanese dogwood (Cornus kousa chinensis) and a winged hydrangea (Pterostyrax corymbosa) have also found their place.
