Runner ducks – the amusing snail deterrent in the garden

They're small, they're fast, and they often have a cheeky expression: Runner ducks enhance any garden and are sure to bring a smile to their owner's face. Not only their sleek running style, but also their practical ability to destroy all the snails in the garden is a source of joy for the animal-loving gardener.

General information about the runner ducks:

Their quick, waddling gait and lively temperament are characteristic of this upright duck. As a flight animal, they must be constantly alert and attentive. Their extended wings make runner ducks virtually flightless, which makes them particularly good runners. Whether wild-colored, yellow, white, brown, or blue: these cheerful, slender speedsters come in a wide variety of plumage colors.

They also have a fondness for snails and worms. This is extremely useful during the annual snail plague in summer. Before chemical pesticides are used, runner ducks, as natural predators, are a much gentler method of getting rid of the unwanted snails. Laying 150 eggs per year, they are also among the birds with the highest egg production. However, the eggs should be boiled for at least eight minutes.

The following can be said about their origin: Runner ducks are descended from the mallard and are also called "Indian Runner Ducks." According to current knowledge, they came to Europe from Southeast Asia around 1850 and were then bred primarily in the British Isles.

Important information about posture:

Before bringing these lively birds into your garden, there are a few things to consider. As their name suggests, these birds are very active and should be given an area of around 500 square meters per pair. They particularly enjoy bushes or trees where they can seek refuge. The property should be surrounded by a sufficiently high and dense fence to prevent unwanted escape attempts or attacks by predators.

A coop for the night is definitely necessary to protect the ducks from the cold or from predators such as martens or foxes.
A coop area of one to two square meters per pair of ducks is sufficient. The coop should also be wind- and rainproof and lined with soft bedding such as straw, sawdust, or hay. A clever design, such as removable walls, makes regular cleaning of the duck coop easier.

In terms of food, runner ducks naturally have a preference for snails, but these lively ducks also enjoy leftover lettuce and greens. Ready-mixed feed such as "Grain Mix for Poultry" from pet stores is an ideal addition to their diet, especially in winter.

Runner ducks don't thrive in solitude and isolation. For this reason, you should always keep at least a pair, or even better, a small group, to ensure the birds have a happy life in your garden.

Once the time has come and you've decided to buy, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you shouldn't buy chicks younger than eight weeks old, as the sex can only be determined at this point. Furthermore, you should avoid buying siblings, as this risks inbreeding.
It's best to acquire these fast-running ducks in the fall. It's also important to find out exactly where the animals come from, as well as any necessary vaccinations and deworming. Prices for purebred and ringed ducks range from approximately five euros per chick, 15 euros for one-year-old drakes, and 20 euros for one-year-old ducks.

Buying a Mallard Duck: How much does it cost?

Another important and perhaps surprising point: runner ducks are also waterfowl and love to swim in open water! The best place for this is, of course, a pond where they can splash, swim, and wash themselves. Runner ducks also need plenty of water to avoid choking on snails. If a pond isn't possible in your garden for cost or safety reasons, you could provide the ducks with something similar, such as a paddling pool. Here, too, the bigger the better. Your speedy snail killers will thank you!

New trend: renting runner ducks or “rent-an-duck”

The project, which originated in Austria, has also become increasingly established in Germany over the past few years. The idea is simple: Runner ducks are "rented" for a short period of time for one's own garden and then picked up by their owner. This concept is particularly suitable for those who don't want to keep runner ducks permanently in their garden, but would like to keep their garden snail-free in an ecological way and fertilize it at the same time.

Anyone who wants to rent these snazzy runner ducks simply needs to find a farmer or breeder who will lend their ducks for this purpose. The garden should also meet certain requirements, such as a good fence, a duck house, and a water basin. If these aren't available, the ducks should only be rented by the day. However, just two or three consecutive days are enough to keep the garden snail-free for several weeks. Numerous breeders and farmers offer this type of duck service starting at just €25 for a few days.

Now you have a choice: long-term runner duck keeping or the short-term "rent-a-duck" method; both options guarantee a snail-free garden naturally. You'll also get a couple of lively companions whose cheerful disposition makes them a valuable asset to any green home.
