Autumn anemone (Anemone japonica, Anemone hupehensis)

An autumn jewel from the buttercup family. It looks great in any type of garden, as the differences in this plant lie in the details, allowing a suitable variety to be found for every taste and every garden situation. Although this perennial species is called an "autumn anemone," its flowering period usually begins in midsummer. It's an autumn perennial with a "premature" character. In the flowerbed, the autumn anemone looks good both at the edges of shrubberies and in showy perennial borders. As a leading perennial, it is an excellent choice, providing abundant color in the home garden from July to October.

Growth form

Maple-like, lobed or divided, coarsely hairy, dark green leaves, about 10 cm in size, depending on the variety, grow between 60 and 130 cm (20-30 cm without flowers), sometimes even up to 180 cm. Over time, the anemones develop into very large plants, which can then be carefully divided in spring.

The flowers are arranged in loose clusters; depending on the variety, the flowering period begins in July and continues into October. The color palette of the 4-6cm flowers ranges from white through all shades of pink to purple. The petals can also appear in a simple, elegant bowl shape or in a narrow form in a "wonderfully ruffled" flower head.

Location requirements

It prefers partially shaded to sunny locations in moist, fresh soil, provided the soil remains moist even in summer; perennial plant lovers generally need 9-12 plants per square meter (or even half that number for vigorous-growing varieties).

Care

Once established and out of their infancy, autumn anemones are no longer a problem. It's important to plant them in the spring, as otherwise the young plants often fall victim to the winter. During harsh, wet, and cold winters during their early years, it's recommended to cover the plants for protection. Anemones love and need moisture, so don't forget to water them regularly in the summer. After flowering, the stems can be trimmed as desired; this is recommended for plants exposed to wind.

Other types/varieties:

Felt-leaved autumn anemone (Anemone tomentosa)
Its appearance is very similar to its sister, Anemone hupehensis, but it appears a bit coarser and firmer. The typical color of the 4-5cm flowers is a soft pink; it blooms from August to September. The Felt-Leaved Autumn Anemone is a true growth artist and thrives even in heavy clay soils.
