The Garden Magic Online Shop Sow and care for Amaranth seeds
Sowing amaranth seeds is straightforward. You can start indoors on your windowsill starting in April. Scatter the seeds onto loose, nutrient-rich soil and cover them lightly, as amaranth needs light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist at 20 degrees Celsius. After 7 to 14 days, the first seedlings will appear. As soon as the risk of frost has passed, the young plants can be planted outdoors in May, spaced 30 to 50 cm apart. Alternatively, direct sowing is possible starting in mid-May.
Amaranth is easy to care for, but requires regular watering and a sufficient amount of water, especially during dry summers. Occasional thinning promotes healthy growth. Since the long panicles can become heavy, support is recommended.
In our Gartenzauber online shop, you'll find high-quality amaranth seeds, ideal for a colorful garden. You can also purchase many other flower seeds and seedlings from us to transform your garden into a veritable sea of blossoms.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is amaranth a light germinator or a dark germinator?
Amaranth is a light germinator. This means the seeds need light to germinate. Therefore, when sowing, you should only press the seeds lightly or scatter them very shallowly on the soil and not cover them. Keep the soil evenly moist and ensure the sowing site is well-lit to promote germination.
Is amaranth hardy?
Most amaranth varieties are annual and therefore not winter hardy. Amaranth is very sensitive to frost and should therefore not be planted outdoors until after the Ice Saints, starting in mid-May.
When should I cut amaranth as a cut flower?
For long-lasting vase life, you should cut freshly bloomed amaranth panicles. If you want to use amaranth as a dried flower, it's best to cut it when the flowers are fully open.
