Growing tips:
Lettuce prefers loose, humus-rich soils in sunny or partially shaded areas. Amending the soil with compost before sowing is recommended.
It can be grown in pots and pricked out, or sown directly outdoors. For all varieties, the germination process stops at temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius! Therefore, when growing indoors, choose a cooler location, and during hot summer months, sowing is best done in the evening. To break down the germination-inhibiting substances, it's also helpful to store the seeds in a wet kitchen towel in the refrigerator for one or two days beforehand. This increases germination potential.
Seeds planted too deeply won't thrive, as lettuce needs light and should only be covered with a thin layer of soil or sand. If the lettuce sprouts later, it's a stress reaction, as it's too hot, too dry, or too densely planted. It's important to protect it from snails, which love lettuce.
