Growing tips:
Red cabbage prefers moist, humus-rich, and calcareous soils in sunny or partially shaded locations. The plants are heavy feeders, so it's beneficial to work mature compost into the soil before planting. However, excessive fertilizer application encourages pest infestation.
The plants are pricked out at the cotyledon stage. It is advisable to grow the cabbage under fine-mesh netting to protect it from insects such as the cabbage leaf fly and the cabbage white butterfly. Adequate watering is essential.
Harvest time is when the cabbage head is fully developed and pleasantly firm. It is then cut from the stalk with a sharp knife, and the unusable root is disposed of in the compost.
Mixed culture:
Good neighbors: beans, cucumbers, leeks, peas, celery
Bad neighbors: other cabbage varieties, garlic and onions

Traditionally, red cabbage is often served cooked as a side dish. Early cabbage can be used to add a delicious touch to hearty salads. The earlier the cabbage is harvested, the shorter its storage time.
