Growing tips:

Oregano can be sown all year round, but if the seeds are sown by September and the plants are overwintered frost-free, you will get a strong young plant that sprouts strongly the following spring.

When sowing, it's a good idea to lightly cover the soil with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out and encourage faster seed germination. The oregano should then be planted in a sheltered spot and covered with brushwood during the winter, so it will sprout vigorously again in the spring. The plants should be replaced every 4-5 years, as their nutrient content decreases over time.

Fresh leaves and shoot tips can be harvested continuously, ideally on a dry morning. For drying, oregano is harvested shortly before the flowers open.

Oregano is a versatile culinary spice, ideal for use in ground meat, poultry, beef, pork, vegetables, and potato dishes. Oregano is indispensable for pasta and pizza. The flowers are also edible and can simply be sprinkled over dishes. It is also considered a medicinal plant and is beneficial for general well-being, has anti-inflammatory properties, and stimulates bowel function.
